Adult Therapy
Creative psychotherapy to support you
Art therapy combines both creative processing and verbal reflection at a balance that suits you best to support you aims and needs. Sometimes verbal recall doesn’t support full integration or processing of our experiences.
Instead art therapy offers an alterative safe distance to process such responses both in our memory systems and somatically within our body.
My approach is embedded with psychodynamic psychotherapy, the belief that our unconscious thoughts and feelings alongside our early life experiences shape how we perceive our present world, beliefs and relationships. However I also integrate alternative approaches to best suit your needs and to support your processing.
Art therapy can be accessible for all and can be helpful for developing self awareness and navigating the following:
Emotional awareness; managing anxiety, stress and low mood
Self-esteem, confidence
Traumatic experiences, loss and bereavement.
Navigating understanding pre and post diagnosis of ADHD and Autism conditions and reconnecting with who we are as an individual despite diagnosis.
If creative exploration does not feel best suited for you, you are not obliged to use art materials and we can talk instead.
What to expect
The decision to begin therapy often comes at a time in which we are left feeling that we need to find a lost part or reconnect with our selves. This can be following a challenging or traumatic experience, making sense of our past or a loss or difficulty in navigating complex emotions.
Whatever brings you to beginning your therapy journey, it is important to know what to expect:
Firstly I will invite you for a phone call discussion, to get more of a sense of what is bringing you to therapy now and for you to get a feel if we would be a good fit to work together. Then we would agree a date and time for our first meeting together.
During this session time will be give to agree a working agreement, boundaries and my professional obligation to you in respect of safeguarding and as an independent practitioner.
A typical session
Sessions are usually 50 minutes at agreed intervals. For most, this would be weekly sessions however is agreed on your needs and goals.
You will be invited to use art materials or engage in small objects available. It is always your choice to use materials and this will never be forced. If you do decide to work creatively time will be agreed for you to use and interact with the materials before we revisit your process and how this felt for you.
Everyone’s creative process is different and personal to you, therefore there is no ‘right or wrong’, nor do you need to be good at art or have any history of enjoying art or creative activities.
Within art therapy, we focus on your creative process, what has come to the fore front of your understanding or how you felt whilst making. This can offer an alternative and safe way to process thoughts, feelings, relationships and experiences.
